A few years ago my brother, who is an interpreter at the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum in Savannah, Georgia, showed me a beautiful model of a yacht on display at the museum. It was a model of America. Today a replica of the yacht America is docked at the San Diego Maritime Museum and leads sunset sails and whale watching excursions. It is a replica of the 139-foot yacht that won the "100 Guinea Cup" in 1851 — the cup became known as The America's Cup. Of course, I would have not expected that I would be visiting San Diego and sailing on America a few years later.
Growing up on the coast boating with family you have many opportunities to see porpoises, alligators, manatees and array of captivating wildlife – and it is completely magical. The experience of seeing a whale in the wild invoked that familiar feeling of enchantment but at the end of the day, sailing on America was the experience that I prized the most. It was truly a unique experience that I cannot recommend enough. It's definitely something that you should consider if you are in the San Diego area.
